COLEMAN AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLL FACILITY
Coleman Tower (ETOR) and Coleman PAR

Home of: C-Company,
3-58th Aviation Regiment

The new tower which was built in 2003 and  handed over in May 2004, is the 4th tower ever built at the base. During WW2 there was no Runway or Control tower! The first one was built out of woodpanels on top of building 21(Base OPS)by the 58th Fighter Group in April 1945! Later, as the base became Coleman Airfield in 1952 a new Tower next to the Runway was built out of wood beams and some glass. As the Runway was built in 1953 a concrete Tower was errected which can still be seen. As our Unit moved from Heidelberg AAF to Coleman AAF and the traffic increased, a need for a bigger more modern Tower which could hold all offices, the equipment and the Heidelberg Approach facility was raised. The Army built then, in roughly on year, a state of the art 7 floor Tower!
It is the only one in the Army which has an elevator and is equiped with the most modern technics and equipment the Army has. The Tower was 6 Million Euro which splits into 1,5 Million for the structure and 4,5 Million for the equipment. We are a mixed German and American facility and we have about 7 German and 10 American Air Traffic Controllers working here. All are FAA Checked and most of us are Certified in the Tower and the Approach facility. This means that at almost all times german and english is spoken on the mike!
